District 6

Challenger Division

A program for mentally and physically challenged youths, ages 4-22 (if still enrolled in school), that allows them to enjoy the game of baseball. In addition to the baseball experience, there are proven therapeutic and socialization benefits of participating in sports, the strengthening of their self-esteem, the opportunities to mainstream into other divisions of play and the discipline of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play which are hallmarks of the Little League program. Teams consist of 15-20 players (maximum). The Challenger players wear the same uniforms, shoulder patches and safety equipment as other Little League players. Playing with the same equipment on the same fields, Challenger Division players learn not only the fundamentals of baseball, but also how it feels to be just like other children pulling together as a team, being cheered and earning awards for their achievements.

The games consist of 1 or 2 innings in which each player is given equal opportunity to bat and play in the field each inning. The player has the option to hit off a tee or be pitched to by a Coach. There are no strikeouts and no one gets thrown out. One swing or 50, it's "batter-up" until there's a hit! It doesn't matter if one team has more players than the other because no one - least of all the kids - is keeping score. Players are paired with a "buddy," helping them swing the bat, make their way around the bases or field the ball. Teamwork and success replace the competitive element found in other Little League divisions for all players, regardless of ability or "challenge."

Most important is that Challenger Division baseball is fun for players and parents!
